East Lawrence finished the 2015 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year East Lawrence finished eighth in Class 4A region eight with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Eagles have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2008 season and would love to end that streak this year. They have never won a playoff game in the school's history. East Lawrence struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 37.9 points a game. The Eagles would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 2-18 record. Since 2010, the East Lawrence football program has struggled with a record of 13-47. Over the past 25 seasons, East Lawrence has not won much with a record of 73-181. Their 29.0% winning percentage ranks 55th in Class 3A and 350th in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 1997. The Eagles are led by head coach Jarrod Helms who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at East Lawrence. The Eagles saw improvement from a 0-10 record the season before coach Helms arrived. The Eagles have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Helms. Coach Helms' overall record as a head football coach in five season stands at 16-36 (30.8%). Over the course of his career, Coach Helms' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time . The East Lawrence Eagles will play in Class 3A region eight during the 2016 season. The Eagles may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 4A to 3A. They will compete in region eight this year. Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. It will be an uphill battle for the Eagles if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region eight this season. After just 2 wins last year, East Lawrence will be hoping to become more competitive in the region. The Eagles open the 2016 season on the road against non-region opponent Fairview on Friday, August 26 at Dafford Smith Stadium. Last year the Fairview Aggies finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 5A region seven. The Aggies ended last season on a positive note with a win over Vinemont by a score of 49-20 after failing to gain a playoff spot. East Lawrence and Fairview have met a total of 6 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 3-3-0 record against the Aggies.
